'AITA for driving my exotic car to my girlfriend’s brother’s wedding?'

"AITA for driving my exotic car to my girlfriend’s brother’s wedding?"

So last weekend, I attended the wedding of my girlfriend’s brother. It was a really great time, and I thought I’d be leaving with nothing but good memories, but unfortunately, the night got sour towards the end. So I do automotive content on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Not to boast, but I’ve amassed a pretty decent following over the past few years.

Thanks to this, I’ve been able to buy some really cool cars. I won’t name the kind I currently own specifically, but I’ll say it’s a mid-engine, Italian super car. Now, since I’m not one of the biggest people on the internet, unlike many car channels, I only own this specific car, along with a lowkey daily car I try to keep private as I have started to get recognized more frequently in public.

Well, this daily car I own has been nothing but a headache. Since I bought it a couple months back, it’s been to the dealership more times than I can count for service, and is probably going to be lemon-lawed. On top of that, my girlfriend’s car was totaled in an accident 2 days before the wedding. To keep things short, there is only one car on my property at the moment, and it is the super car.

I didn’t think it would be a problem as my girlfriend’s brother is a big fan of me and my channel, and I’ve given him tons of rides in the car. I’d actually say he’s almost like a brother to me. He actually gave me a ride back home after I dropped my broken car off at the dealer. Well, wedding day rolls along, and I brought my fancy car to the wedding.

It’s a pretty well-known car in the area as it has several sponsors on it, and the design is super flashy. I made sure to make sure the exhaust was as quiet as possible when entering, and I even parked it in the farthest away spot in the lot so that it was out of site. Well, unfortunately, some of my fans found it, and the photo must have started getting shared, and people started taking pictures with the car.

Not a big deal, right? Wrong! One of my fans decided to enter the venue, and asked to take a picture with me. I obviously declined, and told him this was incredibly appropriate, but the night rolled on. Well, at the end of the reception, I come out to my car, with about 20 kids standing outside wanting photos and whatnot. Pissed off, I took them, but said this was once again, very rude and inappropriate.

Fast forward to today, I got a text from my girlfriend’s now sister-in-law’s mom, that said that they didn’t appreciate me making myself the center of attention at their daughter's wedding. Furthermore, she received a text along the same lines from her SIL.

Now, I love my girlfriend, and she will stand my side and vouch for me, and that she did. The response she got upon a phone call to her SIL was that apparently, we should have either “asked someone else for their car” or “rented something discreetly.” I couldn’t help but wonder now, WITA for driving this car there?

Here's what people had to say to OP:

nwprogressivefans:

Lol your fans are totally the AH here.

You should probably address this with them. Maybe you should set up a meet and greet, and sell signed photos or whatever.

ThrowRA-1447753 OP:

It was most definitely posted on my IG story afterwards how disappointed I was in them breaching my privacy.

sew3521:

NTA. The fans of you are though. But you can't control them. I'm absolutely shocked at all the people saying YTA. Renting a car is not cheap. It also takes a while to get to the rental place, rent the car, get back to the rental place, return the car, and that is not mentioning how you'd get there and back.

Ubering is generally not cheap either.

The people who are saying YTA for not doing one of those things are either delusional, don't have much life experience, or are simply trolls.

ThrowRA-1447753 OP:

Honestly, it never even crossed my mind to rent something. I figured might as well just drive the only functioning car we have currently. And yes, obviously my fans are more to blame here. I already addressed their behavior on my IG, and I made plans to include my frustration with their actions in a future video.

Nrysis:

YTA. If you are popular to the level of being spotted by fans when you are out and about, you need to factor that in when you attend events. Leaving a well known, easily identified and flashy car sitting outside all day is like raising a flag to say "I am here."

The one consideration you do get is that if this is fairly new to you, you may genuinely not have expected that sort of reaction, or that sort of behaviour from your fans, so I can accept that it wasn't necessarily intentional or expected. But equally you already own a car because you know you want something low key, so it can't have been too great a surprise for your car to draw some attention.

So yeah, while not the worst of the worst, your lack of forethought did negatively affect the wedding, and that makes you TA. And next time, take the other car, rent something for the day, or take an Uber...

Able-Werewolf-4243:

YTA. A big unwritten rule of weddings is not to do anything that takes the spotlight off the bride and groom. You knew your car was flashy, recognizable, and covered in sponsor decals. Even if that wasn’t your goal, you should’ve known it would draw attention.

It was sweet of your girlfriend to defend you, but she shouldn't have been put in that spot. Now she’s dealing with tension with her new sister-in-law over something you could’ve easily avoided. You had other transport options. This wasn't the occasion to take that risk.

552view:

YTA. You want to keep your daily driver private because of the fame. The fact that you are at that point means you should have arranged something way less attention grabbing. You know your car is known and could be a distraction and you still went with it. Uber, borrow, rental. Plenty of options and you chose the only one that could cause issues.

Ninja_Friendly:

You could've ubered or you could've rented a more discreet car if you don't want to attract attention. I mean, even you claim that your gf's car was totaled two days ago, you'd think y'all are on a loaner or rent a car, because is she expecting you to be driven around in that flashy car everywhere? Maybe she also enjoys the attention :)

Also, the dealership must suck because usually you get a loaner if your daily is being fixed. Heck, my brother just took his Toyota Camry in for service the other week and he got a loaner. Since you do want the attention, I'd say YTA.

Several_Razzmatazz51:

YTA. If you are so “successful” you could have rented something discreet. You have a “daily driver” for a reason and it should have been obvious to you that this was an occasion for your daily driver or some other non-flashy car if your daily driver was unavailable.
